The 17th Tour to South Korea: 18~24 August 2008

Telemann Institute Japan has kept up its performance tour to South Korea at an interval of once a year or so, beginning the year after the Seoul Olympic in 1988.  Takeharu NOBUHARA has incubated and acted upon his basic idea of creating “culture through international exchange” since he started his quest for the early music. The TIJ's tour to South Korea included performance at Independence Park or the Soedaemun Prison History Hall at the West Great Gate, Seoul and at another place in Seoul on 1st March (the independence movement day of Sam-il-undong)*1, both having much significance in the light of the complex socio-historic relationships between Japan and South Korea. Each performance has enjoyed an overwhelming acceptance from the audience. Shin-ichiro NAKANO delivered his speech in hangeul (Korean) and in return he received a warm standing ovation from the audience for his musical performance.

In the past years, the South Korea Tour mostly has been by Collgium Musicum Telemann that employs baroque musical instruments. This Tour, however, is focused on the “baroque modern performance”, which employs modern musical instruments in playing baroque music, a style Takeharu NOBUHARA has been concentrating in Japan recently. The performance in this style outside Japan is the first attempt for Telemann Institute Japan.

Yoong Kwang Kang who has been appointed Konzertmeister (leader) of TIJ since 2008 will appear as violin soloist for the entire works of the Four Seasons by A.L. Vivaldi and his performance deserves a close attention.

As usual, the Tour performance includes joint collaborative works on violin concertos and harpsichord concertos with local soloists in South Korea, which are warmly welcomed by the audience in each year.
